Why Use a Special Bearing?

The characteristics of special bearings diverge from international standards in order to satisfy special application requirements. Special bearings differ from standard bearings by their form, dimensions, materials or by the integration of external components such as couplings or shafts.

These bearings must normally be developed specifically. WIB has over 30 years of experience in this field and can offer a wide range of tooling and components. This enables the development of special constructions by using standard components in order to offer the best solution both technically and economically.

Special bearing types are useful when standard bearings are not in a position to meet all the requirements for a special customer application. The following reasons give some idea of the various parameters which are normally decisive in the development of special bearings.

Technical Reasons

● The application requires a special form (e.g. for wire guides, linear guides, etc.)

● Ease of assembly or requirements for high precision in assembling (e.g. by integrating couplings)

● Special environment (dust, oil, chemical vapour, temperature, etc.)

● Special conditions of use (shocks)

● Special mounting dimensions

● Improvement of the technical characteristics (speed, temperature, load, etc.)

● More compact dimensions

● Increase of the bearing service life (e.g. hardening of the working surfaces)

Commercial Reasons

● Cost reduction for assembly, maintenance and/or replacement

● Control of the replacement market (dimension or special branding)

Marketing Reasons

● Customized design, adapted to the customer's image or to a special trend (form, colour of the cage, the shield or the seal, personal brands)
